President’s Message

Does Your Job Title Get the Job Done?

by Jeannette Beck

The title of this article by William Taylor in a Fast Company’s July 20 post caught my eye.  In other words, “Does your title describe your job/responsibilities?”  Partial interest is because my official University title, “Assistant to the Department Head” is often mistaken by people off campus as the Department Head’s secretary.  And, working in HR for most of my career, I hear from many employees who seem to want finagle a certain title.  The request is usually prefaced with, “Not that the title really means a lot to me, but….” But… it means a lot to me.

The article is about rampant inflation of job titles.  I thought my son’s Disney internship experience is a great example.  His title was “Vacation Planner”; however, his actual job was selling tickets from inside a booth at the park entrance.  The lesson he learned was that you probably won’t get a really meaningful task if you’re being paid minimum wage.

The winner, by a mile, of the most inflated title was North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il, who, according to The Economist, has 1,200 official titles, "including roughly translated, guardian deity of the planet, ever-victorious general, and lodestar of the 21st century." Taylor adds, “Memo to President Obama: "Leader of the Free World" seems downright lame compared with "supreme commander at the forefront of the struggle against imperialism and the United States"--not to mention my personal favorite, "greatest man who ever lived."”

Taylor continues, “CB Richard Ellis, the real-estate giant, has not one but four different CEOs. The c-suite in general is getting bigger and bigger, as Chief Information Officers welcome in Chief Knowledge Officers and (at Kodak) a Chief Listening Officer as well as (at SAP) a Chief Sustainability Officer. Even lower-ranking employees are getting loftier-sounding titles, from "sandwich artists" at Subway to cleaning companies who employ "sanitation consultants."

Fast Company had an early feature that was discontinued.  The feature was called "Job Titles of the Future," in which they found ordinary people doing real work with official titles that were decidedly out-of-the-ordinary.

I reviewed the list of titles members of Executive Club have on the directory and noticed that the titles are not the least bit unusual.  We’ve got a collection of only ordinary, staid titles.  I wonder what that says about us.

Speaking of titles, this will be my last month as your Executive Club President.  It’s been a rewarding experience and I’m looking forward to becoming Ex-officio to the Board in September.
