Title: “Mothers, Daughters, Others: Representations of Women and Girlhood in Contemporary Middle Eastern Art

Description: Women around the world have often been made the objects of artistic representations, and, in doing so, their voices are not heard.  In this talk we will see examples of female artists from the Middle East region who place women’s lives and experiences at the center of their work.  Visual artists, photographers and musicians from Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen create representations of mothers, daughters, women, and girls as individuals with their own stories to tell and perspectives.  These representations of women as agents of their own lives are relatable across cultures

Bring your mother or daughter for free!

Presenter: Angela Williams is the Associate Director at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she has worked on educational programs related to the Middle East and South Asia for campus and community audiences for the past ten years. She completed her MA and BA in Linguistics at Illinois, and studied Arabic at the Arabic Language Institute at the American University in Cairo. Dr. Williams does research in applied, Educational Policy Studies and International Education, particularly as it relates to women, art and representation.
