Title: "Woman Suffrage and Women's Rights in Champaign County" with Barb Oehlschlaeger-Garvey and Katie Snyder

Description:

March is Women's History Month, and we are excited to welcome two presenters from the Museum of the Grand Prairie in Mahomet to talk about some important moments in local history for women.

In 1920, when the 19th amendment was ratified and became law, 26 million women were able to vote for the first time. It was the largest enfranchisement of people in the history of the US and certainly a moment worth celebrating as the Museum of the Grand Prairie has in its exhibit, "How Long Must Women Wait: Woman Suffrage and Women's Rights in Champaign County." However, the women’s suffrage movement, locally and nationally, is only one landmark in a long continuing struggle for women and other marginalized people to claim an equal role in society and establish that their lives are important and have worth, allowing them to maximize their contribution to society. In this presentation, we'll discuss both the suffrage movement and later developments in women's rights.

About the Speakers:

Barb Oehlschlaeger-Garvey is the Director of the Museum and Education Department of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District. She earned a Ph.D. in Art History from UIUC, and has worked previously at the Krannert Art Museum and the World Heritage Museum.  She and her husband John live near downtown Champaign in the house where they raised three strong and bright daughters.

Katie Snyder is the Education Program Specialist at Museum of the Grand Prairie. She comes to the museum following a career in education, and after earning a Master’s Degree and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Curriculum and Instruction at UIUC. She is motivated in her work and in her daily life, by the stories of the unsung heroines who have made a difference in their communities. She is the proud mom of two grown children who flipped gender norms—a young man who is a teacher, and a young woman who is a doctor.
