Title:  "CCWAR to RACES: 50 Years of Supporting Survivors in Champaign County" with Jaya Kolisetty

Description:
The modern rape crisis movement in America developed from grassroots efforts that built on a long history of activism by women of color. As one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the country, Rape Advocacy, Counseling, & Education Services (RACES) has been part of this movement for 50 years. From its founding as Champaign County Women Against Rape (CCWAR), RACES has grown to serve survivors of all genders in four counties. In recognition of Women’s History Month, join RACES’ Executive Director, ECCC Member, Jaya Kolisetty, for a discussion of this history and an introduction to how RACES continues to serve survivors of sexual violence and stalking half a century later.

About the Speaker:

Jaya Kolisetty, MA, MBA, is an anti-violence advocate and educator who has devoted her career to addressing and preventing sexual and domestic violence with a focus on intersectionality and the needs of South Asian survivors. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Rape Advocacy, Counseling, & Education Services (RACES) and is an elected member of the Urbana City Council. Originally from the Chicagoland area, Jaya has made CU her home since her undergraduate days at UIUC, with a small break for grad school in DC. She and her husband, Patrick, live in Urbana with their 19-year-old cat, Sensi, and love biking and traveling, including trips to visit family in India whenever possible.
